Can Red Hair Dye Lighten Dark Roots and Cover Grays? + Before & After Hair Color Results

If you went from dark brown or black hair to red, you know that it’s a lot of upkeep. The color fades and maintaining the same shade of red all the time isn’t easy. I personally just let the type of “red” my hair is change constantly!

Usually, I gently bleach my roots or use L’Oreal Hicolor to lighten and dye my hair, but I wanted to see if I could find a product from the grocery store that would work well enough. Honestly, box dye can only lift your hair one or two levels, but the grays will definitely be covered if you get the right product!

I used the Revlon Colorsilk permanent hair dye in Medium Auburn. This was the lightest red that was on the shelf at the closest grocery store, which didn’t have much of a selection. I’ve used this brand before when I dyed my hair blue black as a teenager and love the smell of the conditioner that comes with it! It also comes with gloves and has easy-to-follow instructions.

I applied the hair dye to my roots first, then covered the rest of my hair and let it sit for 35 minutes. I left the conditioner on for longer than needed and hoped for the best.

The result is as expected, and an improvement from my dark roots! I managed to get a little bit of lightness and a red tint, and almost feel like the picture doesn’t do it justice. I have lots of red depositing hair masks and will keep my roots like this for a while to experiment.
